Common Guinea Pig Health Problems

Guinea Pigs actually don't have a lot of health issues, but when they do, it can be serious.
Colds
Colds usually occur in Guinea
Pigs who live in a damp or drafty environment. Signs of a cold are a
runny nose, ruffled coat, coughing or diarrhea. If these symptoms
occur, take the Cavy to a vet right away.
Fur Loss
Fur Loss usually has something
to do with an inadequate diet. Feeding your Cavy a wider variety of
veggies may cure this problem.
Internal Parasites
Intestinal parasites include
tapeworms and roundworms, and can be very dangerous. Symptoms include
weight loss and diarrhea. For this, take your Cavy to a vet.
Lice and Fleas
Lice and Fleas are common
issues among Guinea Pigs. Symptoms include itching, biting, and bald
patches. You can try using a flea or lice spray (made for Guinea Pigs), or you can just take your Cavy to the vet.
Internal Illnesses
Internal Illnesses are very
fatal to Guinea Pigs. Symptoms include shortness of breath, fever, or
inability to move. Seek medical attention right away!
