Feeding your Guinea Pig
Guinea Pigs need a well balanced diet every day; pellets, water, veggies, hay and supplements.
You have to feed your Guinea
Pigs pellet food every day; otherwise, they may lack important
nutrients. Buying a food from a pet store is ok, but be sure to check
the ingredient list for Timothy Hay; an important part of a Cavy's
diet. Avoid things with nuts and seeds. Check the 'milled' date; the
fresher it is, the more Vitamin C will be present. It's fine to leave
out food for your Guinea Pig at all times, but make sure they don't
over-eat.
Guinea Pigs need fresh hay
available at all times; Timothy Hay is the best choice. Alfalfa Hay
makes a good treat, but only feed it occasionally. Grasses are good for
your Cavy, too!
You should provide fresh veggies
every day for your Guinea Pig. Start with about a handful, and give
them more if they still seem hungry. Be sure to remove uneaten food, as
this will cause a moldy mess! Experiment with different types of fruits
and vegetables, to see what your Guinea Pig likes. Be sure it's safe
for them to eat, though; cabbage, potatoes nuts, seeds, and beans are
not safe for a Cavy to eat. Some safe food choices are cucumbers,
parsley, and carrots.
Guinea Pigs will need to have a
Vitamin C supplement put in their water every day. Their bodies cannot
produce this vitamin, so they must also have Vitamin-C-veggies as well.
Giving your Guinea Pig Calcium is also good, but too much can give them
bladder stones.
Water should be provided for
your Guinea Pig at all times. Using a dish is a bad idea, so use a
commercially-available water-bottle instead.
